Roadworks and road closures
NZTA SH1 road resurfacing works - from March until end of 2026
NZ Transport Agency will begin major road resurfacing works on State Highway 1 between Cambridge and Tamahere from Sunday, March 1.
The works are expected to continue through to late 2026.
Stage seven
From 10pm Sunday, October 11, the southbound SH1 on-ramp at the Cambridge Southern Interchange will be closed for up to four weeks, weather dependent, while asphalt resurfacing works are carried out.
During the closure:
Southbound traffic leaving Cambridge to travel onto SH1 will need to detour via the Victoria Road Interchange at Hautapu.
Northern Interchange (Velodrome) closures overnight 8-9 September
• The Northern Interchange (Velodrome/Cambridge West) will be closed overnight on Tuesday 8 September and Wednesday 9 September, from 6pm – 6am (weather dependent).
• During these closures, there will be a detour via the Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu).
There will also be an overnight closure on Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu) from Monday September 21 to Monday September 28, from 8pm to 6am (weather dependent).
Cambridge West (Velodrome) northbound on-ramp closure
From Monday, August 17, the northbound on-ramp at Cambridge West/Velodrome will close until mid-September as part of ongoing roadworks.
Northbound traffic from Cambridge:
Traffic wanting to access SH1 northbound towards Hamilton should use the Victoria Road Interchange at Hautapu.
Residents-only access will be available on Cambridge Road from the Velodrome roundabout to the start of the worksite at the on-ramp.
The Tamahere Interchange is not impacted by the closure, but increased congestion is expected as SH1 traffic merges to one lane in each direction.
Stage five
From Monday July 20, travelling south on SH1 from Hamilton won't be able to exit the Expressway via the northern end of Cambridge Road (Cambridge West/Velodrome) while NZTA completes the next stage of resurfacing works.
Detours in place:
- Traffic travelling south from Hamilton to Cambridge: Continue south on SH1 and exit at the Victoria Road Interchange, Hautapu
- Tamahere Interchange: The interchange remains open, however expect increased congestion, particularly during peak travel times, as SH1 traffic merges to one lane in each direction south of Tamahere.
Stage four
From Monday 15 June to mid-July (weather dependent), traffic heading north on SH1 towards Hamilton will not be able to exit at Victoria Road Interchange, Hautapu while resurfacing works continue.
Detours in place:
- Traffic travelling to Cambridge northbound from Karāpiro: Exit at the Southern Interchange (Tīrau Road, past the Cambridge Golf Club)
Northbound traffic leaving Cambridge, you can either:
- Exit via the Northern Interchange (Cambridge West) and use Cambridge Road/Hamilton Road to access SH1 northbound.
- Exit via SH1B/SH26 and back to SH1 at Hamilton
Stage three
NZTA are starting stage three on Sunday, May 17, with work moving north between the Victoria Road interchange at Hautapu and Northern Cambridge interchange.
To complete this safely, the southbound on and off ramps at the Victoria Road, Hautapu interchange will be closed.
A detour will be in place for southbound traffic leaving Cambridge from Hautapu. Southbound traffic on the expressway can access Cambridge by exiting at the Northern interchange and using Cambridge Road/Hamilton Road.
Motorists should expect delays and congestion, particularly at the:
- Victoria Road/Cambridge Road roundabout beside St Andrews Church
- Albert Street/Achillies Street intersection
- Shakespeare Street/Tīrau Road intersection.
Stage three is expected to be completed by early July.
Stage two
Work will move to the southbound lanes between Tirau Road and Victoria Road. There will be no impact to on or off-ramps during this stage.
Stage two is expected to be completed mi-May.

- Delays during peak travel times
- Work underway day and night, six days a week (weather permitting)
Motorists travelling through the area are advised to allow additional travel time and check the NZTA Journey Planner before departing.
Allwill Drive, Hautapu - Stormwater upgrades (July to December 2026)
King Street and Vogel Street, Cambridge – Watermain upgrades (August to December 2026)
- Monday, August 3 to Friday, December 18 (weekdays only)
- Weekday work from 7.30am – 6pm only.
- There will be shoulder closures throughout the duration of the upgrades with potential road closures to come.
- Stage one – King Street, between Grey Street and Vogel Street
- Stage two – Vogel Street, between King Street and Hamilton Road
Work will start on corner of Grey Street and King Street, with work progressing in sections.
Events on roads - Summer Series Cycling Event
Donald Lane, Cambridge closure, Thurs Oct 22
Donald Lane will be closed on Thursday, October 22, between 8am and 4pm while Waipā Networks Ltd carries out power upgrade works. Work crews will be on site to manage traffic and coordinate access for emergency services and residents of affected properties. Thank you for your patience while these works are completed.
